Yahoo Boy Sentenced To 6 Years In Jail For 7.8 million naira scam

Yahoo Boy Sentenced To 6 Years In Jail For 7.8 million naira scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Friday , March 17, 2017, secured the conviction and sentencing of an Internet fraudster, Akintunde Vincent Abiodun, a.k.a. Christopher Williams, before Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja.

The 37-year-old convict was arraigned on January 23, 2017 on an amended 12-count charge of stealing and forgery to the tune of N7, 806, 093.00(Seven Million, Eight Hundred and Six Thousand, and Ninety Three Naira).

Abiodun’s long walk to jail began after he presented himself as Christopher Williams to his victim, Dona Bonni, whom he met on a dating site on the Internet.
The convict, as part of his tricks, had told to Bonni that he inherited gemstones worth $18, 050,000((Eighteen Million and Fifty Thousand United States Dollars) from his late father in the United Kingdom.

He also forged an American passport with which he convinced his victim of his purported nationality.
Consequently, the convict dishonestly received various sums of money, at different times, from his victim.

When he was arraigned, he pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him, thereby setting the stage for his trial.
The prosecution counsel, Ola Sesan, tendered several documents that were admitted in evidence and presented witnesses who testified against the accused.
In view of this, the convict later filed an application for plea bargaining before the court.
Delivering his judgment today, Justice Ipaye, however, sentenced the accused to six years imprisonment.

The convict was found guilty and jailed three years each on counts 1 to 11 of stealing. The convict was also found guilty and jailed three years each on count 12 of forgery. The sentences are to run separately from the date of arraignment.

A female NYSC member, Francisica okonkwo who is set to pass out next month, died in a fatal accident along 9th mile round about in Enugu State.

According to the source, the incident happened just immediately after their CDS meeting yesterday, the 9th day of March, 2017.

NYSC redeploys corps member assaulted in Zamfara

NYSC redeploys corps member assaulted in Zamfara

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has redeployed a corps member, Mr Michael Uwakwe, serving in Zamfara to Anambra, following his assault by a police officer.

Mrs Victoria Okakwu, the NYSC Director, Corps Welfare and Inspectorate, made this known to newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday.

Okakwu explained that the corps member was redeployed to ensure his safety and security while carrying out his national assignment.

The briefing was designed to keep the public abreast on the outcome of investigations conducted by
the scheme on the slapping of a corps member serving in Zamfara as earlier reported by some media.

The reports had alleged that Uwakwe was brutalised and manhandled by the police for punishing a student who happened to be a rich man’s ward by simply asking him to go on his knees.

Okakwu said that after proper investigations and resolution of the matter the scheme has also ordered the immediate withdrawal of 11 other corps members who were serving along with Uwakwe at Nasara Standard Academy, Gusau.

She said that the 11 corps members have been re-posted to serve in other establishments in Gusau as a proactive measure to ensure their safety and security.

“On Wednesday last week we got information from Zamfara state that a corps member was beaten by the police, arrested, detained and later released.
“When we got this information I had to speak to the state coordinator to investigate the matter thoroughly. From our investigations, the corps member had a problem in the school he was posted to serve.
“He came into the class and said he was going to give the students a test asking them to put their books away and get ready but that this student was not just cooperative.

“In the process of doing the test she hissed and he asked why she will hiss in the class because it was a rude behaviour but she had nothing to say after a while she hissed again and he went to her to ask why again.

“The next thing he saw written on her script was `Nonsense Tes’.

That got him infuriated and he asked the student if the questions he set were out of what he had taught them.
“The girl will not answer so he instructed her to kneel down. In the process he asked her to crawl with her knees and after that he left; later he came to look for the girl and she was no where to be found.
“The girl went home, spoke to her father and he went to the police.

The corps member was in the staff room when he was called that he was needed in the principal’s office.
“When he got there he was asked to go with the police but he declined stating that he was just doing his job but he later agreed to go to the police station if the principal will go with him.
“He went with the principal to the police station and in the station he was slapped and detained for six hours,” Okakwu said.

NYSC has released the real picture of Esi Uwakwe who was slapped by a police officer in Kaura Namoda in Zamfara state.

They shared his picture and wrote;

“THIS IS UWAKWE UNHURT!
Contrary to the mischief being made online with strange picture of a man with deep cuts on his back, this is latest picture of Corps member Esi Uwakwe, who was assaulted by a policeman in Zamfara State.
Uwakwe, who was with us at the NYSC Headquarters yesterday, acknowledged the Scheme’s intervention in his case, and has since put the matter behind him.
We remain committed to protecting Corps members wherever they are serving while also appealing to other stakeholders to show love and hospitality to them in their various service locations.”

Ifedolapo Oladepo: FG To Exhume Late NYSC Member’s Body For Autopsy

Ifedolapo Oladepo: FG To Exhume Late NYSC Member’s Body For Autopsy , The Federal Government has hinted that the body of the youth corps member, Ifedolapo Oladepo, who died recently at the Kano State NYSC Orientation Camp, will be exhumed for autopsy.Ifedolapo Oladepo: FG To Exhume Late NYSC Member's Body For Autopsy

The Minister of Youths and Sports, Mr. Solomon Dalung, dropped the hint on Thursday while addressing State House correspondents.

The National Youths Service Corps had, in its investigation’s report, said the girl, a first-class graduate of Transportation Management from Ladoke Akintola University Ogbomosho, died of a kidney infection.

President Muhammadu Buhari had yesterday ordered an independent investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of Ifedolapo who has since been buried.

But the sports minister explained today that the independent investigation ordered by Buhari would require an autopsy to balance the government’s conclusion on the incident.

“The report given by NYSC is normal and it’s natural that after investigation, they must present their own report on what has happened. But in view of the fact that there are many versions on what led to the death of the NYSC member, it would be fair to look at another version of what happened to be sure of what actually transpired. It doesn’t have to do with (President Buhari) not trusting the process; but gauge the report alongside other opinion; then, we’ll now be able to tell Nigerians that there were the circumstances on how she died.

“Don’t forget that the report of the NYSC has no autopsy and an independent investigation will require an autopsy. And now, the autopsy, alongside the report, will balance and it will fortify the conclusion the government will make,” Dalung said.

President Buhari condoles with families of dead NYSC members, orders investigation into Ifedolapo's case

President Muhammadu Buhari commiserates with the families of three National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who lost their lives recently during the 2016 Batch ‘B’ Orientation Programme in three States.
The President, who describes the demise of these young Nigerians as “shocking, sad and unfortunate,” regrets that they died in the course of answering the national call to serve.
He urges the families, friends and associates of the deceased to be consoled by the knowledge that their loved ones paid the supreme price while on national service and not for ignoble reasons.
President Buhari also extends condolences to the Director-General and Management of the NYSC over the transition of the youth corps members, Chinyerum Nwenenda Elechi, Ifedolapo Oladepo and Monday Asuquo Ukeme, in Bayelsa, Kano and Zamfara States respectively.
While enjoining the Management to do all within its powers to protect the lives of those under its charge, the President calls on parents and guardians of current and potential NYSC participants not to panic over the recent tragic deaths.
On the particular death of Miss Ifedolapo Oladepo in Kano State, President Buhari has ordered an independent investigation to unravel the true circumstances.
He prays that God will grant the souls of the departed youths eternal rest.

Youth Corpers Snub Rivers Election Rerun - Read

A source said: “Corps members being contacted by INEC to participate in the Rivers rerun election are showing reluctance to serve in the election,”

“A good number of them are afraid that there could be violence during the election, and these are young men and women who don’t want to get killed because of some election.”

However, the state REC, Mr. Aniedi Ikoiwak, said the job of corps members was voluntary, adding that those who did not want to work with INEC on election day were free to opt out.

“…if we have problem of shortage of manpower, we will complete them with workers from other government’s agencies and institutions,”

NYSC addresses death of 3 Corps members Elechi, Ifedolapo and Asuquo

Read their statement below:

The National Youth Service Corps regrets the loss of three Corps members, Elechi Chinyerum Nwenenda, Oladepo Ifedolapo and Asuquo Ukeme Monday during the on-
gong 2016 Batch ‘B’ (Stream I) Orientation Course in Bayelsa, Kano and Zamfara States respectively.
The death of the trio followed brief illnesses and after medical teams in the camps battled to save them in line with established procedures. Their demise, coming in their prime time when they were bracing up for further roles towards advancing their respective families, the nation and the rest of humanity, came as a rude shock to us in the NYSC family.
On behalf of the Management, staff and Corps members nationwide, I wish to express our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased Corps members. May the Almighty God grant them eternal rest and give their families and the rest of us the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses.
While we mourn the demise of these Corps members, who, out of patriotic zeal, answered the clarion call to serve their fatherland, we are constrained to correct the impression of negligence being created in some quarters. Management wishes to state that the welfare of Corps members has always remained topmost in the priorities of the Scheme, and we have continued to strive to give our best in that regard. The policy of the Scheme regarding healthcare during Orientation course provides for the setting up of camp clinic manned by qualified Doctors and other Corps Health Personnel.
The clinics, which are also provided with drugs and other basic equipment, are detailed to render round-the-clock medical services on camp with standing arrangement to refer and ensure immediate movement of patients to more sophisticated health facilities when necessary. We want to inform the public that medical teams in our camps have always been guided by the procedures of practice and in the most professional ways possible.
However, in view of these unfortunate incidents in Bayelsa, Kano, and Zamfara states, Management has set up a high-powered committee to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the loss the Corps members.
Management appreciates the concern of stakeholders, and wishes to assure the general public, especially serving and prospective Corps members as well as parents and guardians that the Scheme will continue to take measures aimed at ensuring the security and general well being of youths enlisted to serve the nation on the platform of the Scheme.

Details have emerged on how a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Kaduna State, Lawal Auwal Kontagora, was murdered in Kaduna.
How NYSC Member, Lawal Auwal Kontagora was Murdered in Kaduna
The deceased graduated from one of the universities in Malaysia four months ago to participate in the one-year mandatory service. He was however killed when he along with his friend went to visit a female friend. While they were inside a Peugeot 407 car with the lady, the hoodlums were said to have moved near the car and asked them to open the door which they did.

When they alighted from the car, they were asked to be on their knees. The assailants then demanded for their mobile phones. It was gathered that in the process of going inside the car to get the phone, the killers thought he was trying to be outsmart them so they shot him at close range.

When his sibling Yusuf Ma’aji Kontagora heard the news around 10:00 p.m., he rushed to the scene and took him to Garkuwa Hospital along Sultan Road where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The young man, who was the first son of Danmaliki Kontagora, Alhaji Lawal Kontagora, from his second wife, Hajiya Hafsat Lawal, was said to be a gentleman and very friendly to everyone.

Speaking on the death of Kontagora, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Kaduna State command, ASP Aliyu Usman, confirmed the murder and said that investigation had commenced.

Also reacting to the incident, NYSC coordinator in Kaduna State, Muhammed Momoh, described the death of the corps member as a shock and a big loss.

According to him, “NYSC has confirmed the death of a corps member who was attacked by hoodlums at Malali. It is unfortunate that at a time the country is developing potential young Nigerians like him, some people are bent on frustrating such effort.

“NYSC condoles with the family of the deceased while tasking the police and security agents to trail and fish out the perpetrators.”

Loretta, Corps member bitten by employer’s dogs cries out

Loretta, Corps member bitten by employer’s dogs cries out

Miss Loretta Okoro, a National Youth Service Corps member in Bayelsa State has cried out over pains caused by bites she sustained from her employer’s dogs.

Loretta, Corps member bitten by employer’s dogs cries out

28-year-old Okoro was bitten by security dogs in her employer’s house on the 5th day of December, 2015, where she was posted for her primary assignment.

It was learnt that three dogs on the premises of the employer, Prof. Klem Imananah, reportedly
pounced on the corps member at about 7pm on that day.

Okoro lamented that her employer and the state chapter of the NYSC had abandoned her to her fate.

She alleged that since the incident occurred, she had not gone through proper medical treatment and that her health had deteriorated.

Okoro, a member of Stream A, with NYSC number NUA/2015/162926, said though the wounds had healed on the surface, she later started suffering from hallucination, numbness, mental torture and psychological imbalance.

Okoro, who said she was posted to the residence of Imananah at Opolo in the Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state, accused her employer of neglect.

She said,

“On December 5, 2015, I was attacked by three dogs owned by Prof. Imananah who I was attached to. The first hospital I was taken to had no doctor to attend to me.

“I called a friend of mine who came to take me to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa. The injuries were cleaned every day and I was given injections. I spent three weeks at the hospital and later went home.

“The following day after being discharged, I started feeling some strange ailment. I have been trying to be stable since then. I can no longer sleep. I see strange and horrible things in my dreams. I have been reaching out to the NYSC to know if they can be of help, but nothing has happened till now. They claimed I am only pretending.

“Even the owner of the dogs has been threatening me with court action, saying that I am embarrassing him.

“I have not been able to do anything. Things have gone beyond my imagination. I have yet to get back to normal.”
Okoro, an indigene of Imo State, appealed to the federal and state governments to wade into the matter.

She said the NYSC in the state had not given her matter the attention it deserved, adding that since the incident occurred, no one from the NYSC had called to know her condition.

Okoro’s colleague, who identified himself only as Kingsley, said the victim’s health had worsened, adding that she needed urgent medical attention.

Kingsley said,

“It was unpleasant on Monday evening. She was hallucinating and screaming throughout the night. I knew her from the camp. But now, everything about her health has changed. NYSC is supposed to protect corps members. But with what I have seen in the case of Lorreta Okoro, we are just on our own. If something urgent is not done, Lorreta may lose her life.”

The employer, Imananah, confirmed that Okoro was bitten by his dogs but said he ensured the corps member was treated until her injuries healed.

He said his dogs were free of rabies, adding that Okoro would not be alive if she contracted rabies from the incident that occurred since December.

He said:
“The girl wants to extort money from me. She thinks it is easy. If a dog bites you and the dog is normal, nothing will happen to you.

“It takes only a few days for someone bitten by rabies-infected dogs to die. What she is saying is total nonsense.”
Imananah said he spent about N200,000 at the FMC to treat Okoro, adding that she was given full dosage of anti-rabies at the hospital.

The state Coordinator of the NYSC, Mr. Anthony Ekeocha, when contacted said he could not respond to the matter on the telephone.
